Sixteen!

Sixteen years ago today, hubby and I got hitched!  Yup... it's been sixteen sweet years!!!  How time flies... it tends to do that when you're having fun, doesn't it?

I am truly grateful to my Heavenly Father for giving me a wonderful gift in my hubby.  He is more than what I asked for or imagined... truly a heaven-sent!

This photo is from way back when we started dating (19+ years ago)...

On our wedding day...

And here we are today (taken during our vacation at DisneyWorld last month)...

"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights..."  --- James 1:17 (NIV)

First Day of Summer

It's the first day of summer... and it's one day past Father's Day.  I am indeed blessed beyond measure to have a hubby who is a great and awesome father to our children! Just like the song I Want To Be Just Like You says...
Lord, I want to be just like You
'Cause he wants to be just like me
I want to be a holy example
For his innocent eyes to see
Help me be a living Bible, Lord
That my little boy can read
I want to be just like You
'Cause he wants to be like me
... I am ever grateful to my Heavenly Father for graciously giving me a wonderful gift in my hubby --- Happy Father's Day to the grace of my life!

Now, summer... it's here and school will be out in just one week's time!  Our household will have a busy summer ahead of us as our church hosts eight weeks of summer sports day camp specifically targeted to low-income families and children in difficult home situations.  It has been encouraging to see many families from our target areas start to register their children... could it possibly be that we are finally breaking ground where we originally wanted to at the start of this church plant?

This thought brings many emotions into my soul... to be quite honest, this (by far) has been the most challenging and frustrating season for me in the life of this church plant.  There is so much that we can do as a church to make a difference where God has placed us but there is so little motivation in most of our people to effect this difference!  This verse pretty much sums it up for me...

When he looked out over the crowds, his heart broke. So confused and aimless they were, like sheep with no shepherd. "What a huge harvest!" he said to his disciples. "How few workers! On your knees and pray for harvest hands!" ---Matthew 9:37-38 (The Message)

So, it is okay for me to feel challenged and frustrated!  Even Jesus noticed the huge harvest with very few workers to do the work.  We are to pray, pray, pray --- that is what this verse is teaching me to do... then HE will send us harvest hands.  It is an amazing, yet simple, promise which I am no doubt clinging to right now.

With that in mind... summer, we welcome you!  Bring it on... for the Lord of the Harvest will send out workers into his harvest field.

Here I am.  Lord, send me!

June... Here We Come!

Wow, June already?!?  How did this school year go by so very quickly?  My son has already started his countdown to THE END OF SCHOOL --- and there are 26 more days including weekends, I've been told!

In a lot of ways, I am looking forward to this month... it is shaping up to look like a calmer month for us.  I'm looking at June as 'the calm before the storm' as our church kicks off 8 weeks of Ignition Sports Camp starting the first full week of July!  I am looking forward to it --- anticipating the great things that God has in store for us as we continue to serve our community in a missional way.

So... May was a busy month for us indeed!  Here are some highlights...

~ I started the transition to reduced hours at work!  I am still in transition mode but everything is going very smoothly.  I am looking forward to my "new norm" in June.

~ May marked one year since my brother-in-law had surgery to remove the cancer in his nasal passage... at this one year mark, they found more of the same cancer in the same general area.  We continue to trust in our good God; for truly nothing is impossible for Him!  As my sister shared on her Facebook status update one day this month...
Many things about tomorrow I don't seem to understand; but I know WHO holds tomorrow and I know HE holds my hand!  --- lyrics from Gospel Ballad by Ira F. Stanphill, 1950.
~ School started to wrap up with concerts and track/field events...

Here's my son in his pirate costume for the Spring Concert... the theme was 'Pirate of the Caribbeans' and their class did an awesome job.

My daughter qualified for the Track and Field Area Meet for Triple Jump. She placed THIRD with a personal best jump of 8.03 metres!!! Way to go, girl! Here she is landing her jump!

~ We went on vacation!  We had an awesome time in Orlando, Florida... where we visited with hubby's sister and brother and their families.  Of course, Disney World was not to be missed... and the Kennedy Space Center... and the beach!!!

No Orlando trip would be complete without a visit to the huge LEGO Store in Downtown Disney. I think I was more giddy than my son!

Star Wars Weekend at Disney's Hollywood Studios!!!  We had one VERY excited little boy that day!

~ On our trip to Orlando, we also visited Teen Missions International and learned about their work with AIDS orphans in Africa!  Wow... it really touched my heart!  My kids were moved too.  We are currently pondering how we might be able to become a part of this incredible mission work.

Well, that was some of our May!  I'm sure June, in its calmness, has its own share of excitement that is coming our way... with end-of-school field trips and lots of family birthdays and anniversaries!!!

Finally, something I read today written by Beth Moore on her blog...
I have seen a fresh revelation of Christ in the last week but not only through tracing His steps in the Holy Land. I’ve beheld it on the faces of His people. Many on the trip and my own beloved daughters, as different as they are, and as imperfect as they’d want me to tell you they are. They have each outdone their parents. Lord have mercy, what messes we were at their ages. Thank You, Lord, for full redemption. For Your willingness to change an entire lineage. Your grace is unfathomable. Continue to use it to set families free.
I could have easily written the exact same thing as I pondered many things while on vacation... y'know, I just have all that extra time to think deep thoughts and discuss thought-provoking things with hubby while relaxing! ;-)   I am constantly awed at my Heavenly Father's redemptive love for us --- how HE continues to mold my children into the masterpieces that HE has designed them to be, in spite of how limited my and hubby's abilities are to parent them!  Thank you GOD --- for YOU are always good!!!

Grace Of My Life

Grace Of My Life is a song by Brian Littrell.  While the song is about his wife, I can so resonate with the lyrics as they relate to my hubby!  He is the greatest gift that God has given to me --- he is the one whom my soul loves!!!  Here's a video and the lyrics follow... (Please pause the Playlist on the sidebar as you watch this video.)

Grace Of My Life

I lie awake so often at night
With something to read or something to write
In the silence my mind is free
To think of the ways that God has blessed me

It's easy to see how He's been so kind
Any proof I might need is right here by my side

You are the grace of my life
So tender, so undeserved
Hard to believe you're my wife {husband :-)}
Even harder to put what I feel into words
If I need evidence God is good
Just looking at you is enough
You are the grace of my life
For you grace my life with your love

Love that is pure, so faithful and strong
You forgive me when I do you wrong
I've seen in you time after time
A picture on earth of love so divine

Oh, I am amazed for how can it be
That someone like you would love someone like me

You are the grace of my life
So tender, so undeserved
Hard to believe you're my wife {husband :-)}
Even harder to put what I feel into words
If I need evidence God is good
Just looking at you is enough
You are the grace of my life
For you grace my life with your love

Joining God

Happy Monday, everyone!  Wow, April's been busy!!!  I can tell because of the number of blog posts on here for this month... this one will only be the fourth.  It's been busy indeed... not only tangible busy-ness but also in my soul.  God's been stirring me...

So, rewind back to Living Proof Live back in March.  The main theme verses were from Isaiah 43: 18-19 and they are:
Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the desert
and streams in the wasteland.
Originally, I made up my mind that God was using these verses to speak to me about another situation in my life.  As the hours after the conference turned into days and weeks, it became increasingly clear to me that HE is speaking to me about something else!  Duh... I can be so clueless sometimes!

Beth Moore explained that the "former things" being referred to in the verse is a good thing --- it was the parting of the Red Sea!  So, why were the Israelites being commanded to "forget the former things" and "not dwell on the past"?  It is because God is "doing a new thing"!  And if we keep living in the past, we wouldn't be able to "perceive it".  This new thing will be different --- "a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland" as opposed to a way through the waters (Red Sea) and dry ground on the sea bed.

You see... God is showing me that the "former things" in my life is my job!  I've been working at this job for close to 10 years now.  It is a good thing in my life... extra income, health benefits, part-time, work-from-home allowing me to be here for my kids!  The "new thing" is an opportunity to join God in the larger church-planting work here in the GTA using my administrative gifts!

This past week, initial steps have been taken to make this transition happen and they have been positive!  I would job share with a friend --- taking me down to 15 hours/week at my job.  I would then use my afternoons for this "new thing".  I am excited and scared both at the same time... and taking this one step at a time as God opens the doors.

This morning, my devotional reading was entitled When God Calls A Woman!  How appropriate, I thought jokingly!  I didn't know how appropriate it really was until I actually read it.  Here's a portion of it:
What's more, God knew what He was getting when He called you, too—someone about your size, with your heart, your personality, your accent, your background, your talents, and even your flaws. God looked you over good and said, "Yep, she'll make a fine partner! Someone who recognizes the reality of that statement understands that they are not working for God but with God. There is a huge difference.

Fear, worry, and anxiety are symptoms of doubt. Doubt often means our focus is on self instead of God. When we trust God to do what we can't, it takes the burden off us and places it on Him. Then, as we look to God, we see reflected in His eyes great potential that only He can accomplish as we join Him.
My prayer is that I can give my fear, worry and anxiety over to God --- that all I will feel about this "new thing" is excitement!  The devotional ended with a prayer and here it is:
Dear Lord, I don't always see the obvious — Your provision; but I trust it's there to empower and guide me beyond my imagination. I'm placing my fear aside today and saying "yes" to whatever You have for me. Lead the way with assurance and clarity. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
That is my prayer too!

Lots Going On... ?

These days, time seems to run away from me!  I wonder if I'm the only one that happens to?  I bet not... :-)  We live in this fast-paced society; running around like chickens with heads cut off; and, most days, it seems like there's lots going on but we've accomplished nothing important... just mundane everyday things.

A few weeks ago, hubby and I saw a TV commercial about Manitoba.  It said something about life being s-l-o-w-e-r in Manitoba.  We both looked at each other thinking: "Hmmm... that sounds appealing!" --- the s-l-o-w-n-e-s-s is appealing, not Manitoba!  Just in case you're wondering...

It really is an intentional act to slow down in this society, isn't it?  Everything around us screams the opposite.  It's always been a habit of our family to inventory the "activities" that we participate in... mind you, we've not always been successful at weeding things out but I think we've done a good job at it.

Speaking of weeding things out... I've managed to offload 5-10 hours of work each week.  This month is a transition month as my boss sorts out who will do what... things should start to fall into place by the start of May.  I'm looking forward to it.  I might be getting less pay from now on but I am thrilled to be able to focus on more things that have eternal value!  This was totally a God-thing... an answered prayer.  Thank you God!

This verse comes to mind right now... from Psalm 37:4 (NIV): "Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart."  So very true!

Living Proof Live Toronto

So, this past weekend was Living Proof Live here in Toronto!  I went to the conference together with my two sisters and two of our childhood girlfriends.  It was all of our first time hearing Beth Moore teach in person... we had a GREAT time!  Great chats, good food and no sleep!!!

Beth spoke from Isaiah 43:16-21, specifically on verses 18 and 19:
This is what the LORD says—
he who made a way through the sea,
a path through the mighty waters,
who drew out the chariots and horses,
the army and reinforcements together,
and they lay there, never to rise again,
extinguished, snuffed out like a wick:

Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the desert
and streams in the wasteland.

The wild animals honor me,
the jackals and the owls,
because I provide water in the desert
and streams in the wasteland,
to give drink to my people, my chosen,
the people I formed for myself
that they may proclaim my praise.
The whole message was broken down into seven points and they are:

1. God is up to something new.
2. God rarely does a new thing the old way.
3. God can do something new in an old place.
4. Just patching up the old won't result in something new.
5. We, too, must be up to something new.
6. God grants new mercies for each new day.
7. I'm making everything new!

In The Message, Isaiah 43:18-19 is written like this:
Forget about what's happened; don't keep going over old history.  Be alert, be present.  I'm about to do something brand-new.  Don't you see it?  There it is!  I'm making a road through the desert, rivers in the badlands.
I love it! God is up to something new... am I ready? Are you? We need to be alert, be present; don't be caught up with what's behind us or what's in the future. Be in the moment. Take it in; be alert!

Francis Chan: Lukewarm and Loving It

40 minutes --- that's all the time it will take to watch this video.  I promise that it will be time well-spent, one that will change you for eternity!  It is a great follow-up to my post from a month ago.

Here it is: (Please pause the Playlist on the sidebar while you watch this video.)

Revelation 3:14-17, 19-21
These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation.  I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot.  I wish you were either one or the other!  So, because you are lukewarm --- neither hot not cold --- I am about to spit you out of my mouth.  You say, 'I am rich, I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.'  But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.

Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline.  So be earnest, and repent.  Here I am!  I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.

To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne.  He who has an ear let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

That's My Girl!!!

Yesterday, my daughter participated in a Public Speaking contest.  She had to decide on a topic to speak about and write a speech about it all on her own.  As I sat there listening to her deliver her speech, I had goosebumps!  I had read her speech before but it would be the first time I'd hear her deliver it orally... she did it with such passion!  Let's just say, I was one proud mama --- my heart was overflowing!!!

As I listened, my heart truly beamed!  I was extremely humbled... standing before me delivering this speech is my daughter, a young lady that is living out her faith.  It is truly in spite of our parenting... it is truly the work of God's Spirit, Holy Spirit, in her young life!  And for that, I give God praise and thanks!

Here is the text of her speech.  She wanted to share about her faith yet according to the rules of the contest, she wasn't allowed to talk about God or her faith at all.  I do think that she did an excellent job achieving both criteria.  Please read on... and you'll see why I'm one proud mama!!!

HOPE & HELP
As tears slipped down the little girl’s face for the 3rd time that day, I sighed as I sat down beside her. I didn’t mind if she cried when she got hit in the head by a football, but this time, she was crying for no reason.
I was volunteering at Ignition Sports Camp: a low-cost and fun day camp. As I sat with this girl, I remembered why my church ran this camp. We ran the camp to help. To help! This girl, along with many of the other boys and girls had probably been through more hardships in the past year than I had all my life. And they were seven. I was twelve.

Later that day, as I signed out kids, I received many “Thank Yous.” I smiled at parents and told them it was our pleasure. As I did this, I wondered why no one had ever decided to run a camp for only $25 a week before. Why are families like the ones coming to our camp not being helped? Why is it all being left to “someone else”?

I realized how much being a part of Ignition and my church had changed me. My eyes were opened to all the things that before I had overlooked. We all know about poverty in Africa and the war in Afghanistan, but what we don’t realize is that there are big needs right here in our own communities and cities. My church often does things in our community on Sunday mornings instead of having a service. Collecting food for the food bank is one example. Did you know the local food bank in Pickering serves around 600 different families a month? Imagine how much food is needed! A lot. Visiting the elderly at the local retirement home is another example. Or serving hot chocolate at the Santa Claus Parade.

Those are big things, which someone with limited resources (like me!) couldn’t do alone. But then you don’t necessarily have to put together a sports camp to make a difference in someone’s life. Small things can make a huge difference in someone’s life as well. Buying a coffee and bagel for that guy near the highway exit who always seems to be there, asking for spare change. Bringing cookies to our firefighters, cooking dinner for a family with a lot going on right now, or simply picking up someone’s dropped groceries in the parking lot are all examples of random acts of kindness. People appreciate the fact that you just went out of your way to help them. And it’s actually fun! I love the feeling of knowing that I just caused a smile in someone’s day. Don’t you?

Human beings may all be different, but we all share one feeling: the need to feel loved. Many of us feel loved every day. Others hit problem after problem without anyone to help them, and they suddenly feel that, even though they share this world with almost 7 billion other people, they are alone. I think back to that person who I helped pick up groceries in the parking lot. I will never know what else could’ve been going on in their life that day. If their life was as I just described, that they feel alone, then now, in a small way, I had just made them feel loved, and not so alone after all. I can’t help but think, if I had just simply walked by, they would’ve thought that I don’t care either, and that nobody cares. By helping them, I just gave them hope. Hope that someone does care! And we all need our daily dose of hope. Think about your life without hope. No hope for anything. Your life would feel pretty empty.

As you’re listening to me, you might be thinking, “this girl thinks she has everything right,” but really, I don’t. Everyone has one of those days, those days where every little thing gets on your nerves. I know I’ve had plenty of those days. On those days, it’s super hard for me to reach out and help the people around me, because I’m thinking, “Why should I help them? My day’s going awful, they could help me!” I know on days like that, I’ve spoken harshly to my brother, rolled my eyes at a kid who need help again or simply gave someone a dirty look. But sometimes, helping someone or even just smiling at someone who looks sad is just what I need to lift my own spirits. It helps to take a step back and think about what other people go through and suddenly my problems seem tiny in comparison.

Small random acts of kindness as well as taking part in big worthwhile causes can both make a positive difference in someone’s life. So next time you think about rushing out the door without holding it for the person behind you, or telling yourself “I have no time” when someone asks you if you’d like to volunteer at the food bank, think twice. Think about what kind of an impact you could make with your decision to help. I know I will. Thank you for listening.
